Adherents of Christianity, known as Christians, believe that Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible (the part of scripture common to Christianity and Judaism). Orthodox Christian theology claims that Jesus suffered, died, and was resurrected to open heaven to humans. They further maintain that Jesus ascended into heaven, and most denominations teach that Jesus will return to judge all humans, living and dead, and grant immortality to his followers. He is considered the model of a virtuous life, and both the revealer and physical incarnation of God. Christians call the message of Jesus Christ the Gospel ("good news") and hence refer to the earliest written accounts of his ministry as gospels. Christianity began as a Jewish sect and is classified as an Abrahamic religion (see also Judeo-Christian). Originating in the eastern Mediterranean, it quickly grew in size and influence over a few decades, and by the 4th century had become the dominant religion within the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, most of the remainder of Europe was Christianized, with Christians also being a (sometimes large) religious minority in the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of India. Following the Age of Discovery, through missionary work and colonization, Christianity spread to the Americas and the rest of the world. Christianity has played a prominent role in the shaping of Western civilization at least since the 4th century. However, the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion was Armenia in establishing the Armenian Orthodox Church in AD 301. As of the early 21st century, Christianity has between 1.5 billion and 2.1 billion adherents, representing about a quarter to a third of the world's population and is the world's largest religion. In addition, Christianity, is the state religion of several countries. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Do some view Christianity as less valid if it has borrowed extensively from other religions? Q. If so, why? Isn't it the case that by adopting the ideas of other religions, Christianity has affirmed that those ideas are of such power and importance to humankind, that they are valid cross-culturally? Shouldn't we be suspicious of a religion which purported to be based on novel ideas foreign to human experience, or those ideas which had been of limited utility? Asked by Citizen of the Cosmos - Mon Jun 1 05:39:30 2009 - - 20 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, I just take issue with the way in which it "borrowed." :) In many places, it was more akin to violent theft. IMO the addition of violence makes it stealing, not borrowing. Maybe they could say "borrowed" if early Christianity had not forcibly subdued its competition, and then afterwards "borrowed" things from those cultural religions to make people "feel better" about the destruction of their culture. And maybe it would be more acceptable if they hadn't twisted the meanings of Pagan temples, gods and symbols, and demonized much of it in the process to justify their "one true way" stance. IMO if you need to forcibly coerce people into following your religion, it mustn't be that great a religion. And if you need to demonize other… [cont.] Answered by Stella - Mon Jun 1 15:03:01 2009 How should I go about deconverting my mother from Christianity? Q. My mother is an intelligent woman sadly raised in a seriously religious household. I have attempted to discuss the follies of Christianity with her, however she is quick to change the subject. So how should I go about deconverting her? Asked by nonoyawns - Sat Apr 25 20:16:27 2009 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am an atheist, as you are obviously as well. Leave her alone if she is happy in her choice. It's okay to tell her what you believe, but make sure you tell her it as A belief, not THE belief. If she asks you, than go about it, otherwise it's probably best to leave it alone. Answered by people's revolution- - Sat Apr 25 20:23:17 2009 Why are there so many sects of Christianity?
Q. I have my own answer to this question but I'd like to see what other people think. The word Christian (Christianity) is used so much, yet there are so many denominations under that one title. One bible, yet so many different beliefs that then were turned into different denominations under one word called Christianity. Why do you think this is so? Asked by Just BN Me - Tue Mar 31 15:16:36 2009 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. Different ways of worship. Islam has many too.(.Shia, Sunni Wahabi Islam and Sufi Islam and apparently over 73). Christians no matter the different 'sect' all believe in God the Father Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.
